Ubuntu 8.10 Released

For all you alternative OS fans out there, Ubuntu 8.10 is out and available in several forms. You can get the Desktop CD version, Server Install CD, MID USB image and the Alternate install CD. Each version comes in either Intel x86 or AMD64 flavors. Grab it if you want it, try it if you haven’t.

The desktop CD allows you to try Ubuntu without changing your computer at all, and at your option to install it permanently later. This type of CD is what most people will want to use. You will need at least 256MB of RAM to install from this CD.

Third Chrome Beta Due in Days

Google says that the third beta of Chrome is “due in a few days.” In addition to fixing a big security flaw, users can expect better performance and reliability for plug-ins as well as newly added support for scrolling with a touchpad.

"You will automatically get updated in the next few days," Chrome program manager Mark Larson said in a mailing list post Wednesday night announcing the new version. People can check if a new version is available by clicking the wrench menu and selecting "About Google Chrome."

Principles on Freedom of Expression and Privacy

Throughout the world, companies in the Information & Communications Technology (ICT) sector face growing government pressure to comply with domestic laws and policies in ways that may conflict with the internationally recognized human rights of privacy and freedom of expression. In response, a diverse coalition of organizations has launched the Global Network Initiative, which seeks to establish guidelines for resisting government efforts seeking to enlist companies in acts of censorship and surveillance. Microsoft is collaborating with other companies, investors, civil society organizations, and academics to establish and implement Principles on Freedom of Expression and Privacy. These principles are based on internationally recognized laws and standards for human rights.

Lawyers Forced To Drop P2P Case Against Seniors

It seems that shining a spotlight on a ridiculous pirating case can go a long way. Good thing too, I was worried grandma and gramps would end up locked up over allegedly downloading a racing game.

The couple enrolled the help of high-profile consumer magazine, Which? Computing, with editor Sarah Kidner supporting the couple entirely. “It’s outrageous that lawyers are falsely accusing people of illegally file-sharing,” she said. “They [Davenport Lyons] should cut out the heavy-handed tactics immediately.”

Keyboard Mouse Combo…Literally

Remember that number pad that was also a mouse? Well, some guy has taken that concept a step further and turned the whole keyboard into a mouse. Ugh, while the idea may “work” I don’t see anyone actually using one of these.

News Image News Image

If you thought your premium mouse had a lot of buttons, check out the Glide Keyboard from Weston Boege. Resting on low friction pads, the keyboard slides around your desk picking up the movement through an optical sensor mounted underneath. The keyboard also integrates traditional mousing controls into the moulded palm rest that grips your hands as they move.

The Beatles Get Standalone Music Game

While it may not be what was initially expected, the rumor that Harmonix has licensed The Beatles’ music is true. But this is not for a Rock Band game, it is a full blown, stand alone game featuring The Beatles. Hmmm, I think it would have been smarter to make a music pack for the game (and Guitar Hero) or branded version of Rock Band instead.

As expected, MTV has revealed that Rock Band developer Harmonics will create a standalone music video game based on The Beatles, produced with the full support of the renowned rock band and their families.

Chevy Volt Getting Trek-like Sound Effects?

Please tell me the doors on the Chevy Volt are not going to make that “whoosh” sound like the doors on the Starship Enterprise. I’m not saying it would be a bad thing. I am just saying that a car that makes Star Trek sounds almost guarantees you’ll remain a virgin for as long as you own the car. Hey, put that in the warranty!

Frank Weber, General Motors E-Flex vehicle line executive, called the Volt's sound "highly technical" and compared it to "when on Spaceship [sic] Enterprise you hear the doors close, or use the transporter." In an interview published on the Volt-specific Web site gm-volt.com, Weber said the Volt's sound will "have no relation at all to a combustion engine" and will be "highly pleasing, almost imperceptible."

Netflix, TiVo Finally Team Up

After flirting with each other for years, TiVo and Netflix have finally teamed up. So what do you guys think? Will this be worth the wait or was this a deal that should have went through two years ago and has missed its time?

Under the partnership announced Thursday, the latest generation of TiVo's digital video recorders will be able to beam selections from 12,000 movies and TV shows offered through Netflix's streaming service, which must be piped over high-speed Internet connections. TiVo's DVRs will start catering to Netflix subscribers in early December.
