[H] New Year's Resolutions

It is New Year's Eve, the last day of the year, time to make a New Year's resolution. We are all in different time zones and some of you will be partying sooner than others tonight and you might end up too drunk to make a resolution. So, to avoid missing the opportunity to make one of the biggest commitments of the year (that will be broken in a matter of days), let's all take a minute now to share our resolutions.

HP Laying Off Another 5,000 Employees

What a great way to celebrate the holidays...firing another 5,000 people. frown

Hewlett-Packard Co said it would cut 5,000 more jobs, bringing the total number of layoffs to 34,000, or 11 percent of its workforce. The company said in a regulatory filing on Monday that it would record a charge of $4.1 billion in 2014, up from its prior estimate of $3.6 billion.

PlanetSide 2 On PS4 Better Than PC Version On Ultra

If I am reading this quote right, either the "ultra" setting for this game is pretty tame or something is seriously wrong here.

With the impending release of the PS4 version, I wanted to know what sort of changes or additions players can expect. "The PS4 version will be nearly identical to the PC version, with the exception of the User Interface," Matt stated, which is sure to please console players. When asked about the game's graphical settings, Matt stated "If you turned up your PC version to Ultra, that's how it's going to look on PS4."

Apple Denies Working with NSA on iPhone Backdoor

Apple has released a statement denying recent allegations that it worked with the NSA on a backdoor for the iPhone.

Apple has never worked with the NSA to create a backdoor in any of our products, including iPhone. Additionally, we have been unaware of this alleged NSA program targeting our products. We care deeply about our customers’ privacy and security. Our team is continuously working to make our products even more secure, and we make it easy for customers to keep their software up to date with the latest advancements. Whenever we hear about attempts to undermine Apple’s industry-leading security, we thoroughly investigate and take appropriate steps to protect our customers. We will continue to use our resources to stay ahead of malicious hackers and defend our customers from security attacks, regardless of who’s behind them.

Steam Removes Game From User Libraries

We've heard from a reliable source that all six people affected are devastated by the news. wink

It was bound to happen sooner or later. Valve’s online gaming distribution website Steam has removed what appears to be the very first game from user libraries. Many games have been removed from the Steam store, but have remained in user libraries. Individuals have had games removed for various reasons as well, but this appears to be the first game, in its entirety, removed from every user library.

Worst PC Game Launches of 2013

This list of the Worst PC Game Launches of 2013 actually lets you vote for your favorite at the end of the article.

But we know that excellence and competence are not always the norm with PC releases. Sometimes things go horribly, horribly wrong at launch. Whether a result of publisher pressure, unfulfilled ambition or, let’s face it, it’s probably publisher pressure, titles often come out as broken as the spirit of a game developer who’s just learned from upstairs that he has to put the game out in two days or else.

Crystal Dynamics Defends $60 Tomb Raider Port

I know you guys will probably have strong opinions on this subject. Do you think Crystal Dynamics should be charging $60 for a port with a tune-up?

Crystal Dynamics executive producer Scot Amos took to the Eidos forums for a Q&A;, and was asked if it was justified to charge full price for a "facelift." "If it was 'only a facelift' AND we were only reselling it on the same platforms we'd already shipped on, I would see your point," Amos replied. "But as we're selling it on a new platform, with a lot of development work put in to custom craft it for the new platforms; with the new additions for the aesthetic, the physics, the particles, the lighting - taking advantage of next-gen features - so I absolutely stand by our decision to offer up Definitive Edition the way we are."

Time Waster of the Day: New Year's Eve Edition

With it being New Year's Eve today, and tomorrow is a holiday for many people, I thought a bit of retro gaming might be just what you need to liven things up a bit. cool
